Comparing and Contrasting
The third graders and I had a wonderful time learning how to compare and contrast multiple texts. We started off by reading several different versions of Red Riding Hood. Of course, we read the traditional story as well as discovered some versions with creative twists on the original tale.
Our favorite hands down was Petite Rouge by Mike Artell. The villian in the book Claude the alligator is one of my new favorite characters. He cracked us up! We could not keep ourselves from laughing out loud when reading this version of Red Riding Hood with a little bit of Cajun spice.
Venn Diagrams
As a class we compared and contrasted Lon Po Po by Ed Young and Red Riding Hood by James Marshall. Students worked with a partner to talk about the similarities and differences between the two stories. After discussings, each group was given three index cards to record their ideas. They were asked to place the index card where they thought it belonged on the class Venn Diagram.
After reading and comparing several stories as a class, the kids worked independently during their learning station time to create their own Venn Diagrams comparing and contrasting two of the stories.
