Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie
Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie is told from the perspective of 14 year old Steven Alpert. An eighth grade boy whose two major interests in life are playing the drums and girls. Steven has had a major crush on the "hottest girl" in eighth grade Renee who doesn't even notice that Steven is even alive.
Steven's life is turned upside in an instant when his five year old brother Jeffrey is diagnosed with Leukemia. Steven desribes the struggles he and his family face while trying to deal with Jeffrey's illness. It is a heartwarming account of the day to day struggles faced by an adolsecent boy and the devastating impact that an illness has on a family.
This book does an amazing job of giving an honest account of the toll that Jeffrey's crisis takes on the Alpert family. It is amazingly honest and has you laughing out loud at some of the situations Steven faces as a typical adolescent boy. It also has the ability to touch you and make you cry when Steven describes the difficulties the Alperts encounter. The characters are so real and honest that you honestly feel like Steven becomes one of your friends. This was honestly one of the best books I have read in a long time. My class fell in love with the story. They are dying to read all the books written by Jordan Sonnenblick. Many of the students have started reading the sequel to the book called After Ever After. Sonnenblick's writing style is very real and honest. The students in my class could really connect with the characters and were begging me to read more.
