Verna Aardema

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears

Verna Aardema was born June 6, 1911, in New Era, Michigan. She grew up with eight brothers and sisters. She used to read to get out of doing chores around the house.

Verna Aardema knew she wanted to be a writer when she was eleven years old. She always loved to tell stories. She told her daughter so many stories that her daughter would not eat until she had heard one. Verna Aardema began writing down the stories she told to her daughter, and she discovered that other people liked them, too!

Now her daughter is grown, and Verna Aardema is well-known for retelling African folktales for children.

  • "In order to get me to do anything in the house, Mom first had to get me away from my book."

  • "Being a writer makes for a busy life."
